Window Treatments for Staying Cool in the Summer Heat

The right window treatments can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your house cool in the heat of the summer.

If youre going for an ultra modern look then brightly colored roll down shades might provide just the right accent for the vinyl or plastic looking furniture associated with this particular look. Venetian blinds blend well with the ultra modern look particularly if you go with some sort of interesting veneer for the blinds that will properly offset the attitude of the room. Good examples of this would be faux leather or colors representing a by gone era such as bright orange or brown.Cellular shades are available in room darkening, light filtering, and complete blackout. They are available in 3/8, 12 and 34 cells. Cellular shades have air pockets between the layers of fabric which trap air and prevent escape. The more cells, the higher the R-value.The first suggestion are cellular shades. They are the kings of insulation, period. Put these up in your windows and you will have dramatically improved the insulation of your windows. Cellular shades are constructed with honeycomb shaped air cells - that's what gives them their insulating properties. They are available in single and double cell (technically there are triple cell cellular shades but, they're hard to find these days). If you want more style options, consider cellular roman shades, which is one of the latest innovations in window shades. These shades are constructed with a single cell lining. There is really no reason other than a complete and total lack of imagination to have drab window dressings in this day and age. Roll down shades and Venetian blinds can be found in any number of styles and designs that are suitable for almost any dcor. You can even purchase them in nursery colors if you are so inclined. Leather Venetian blinds offer a creative touch to libraries or home offices and window shades can be purchased to compliment nearly any dcor or just to identify a particular hobby or passion. Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that todays window coverings are probably more affordable than ever before while allowing for a great deal of versatility and creativity.

To get the most insulation out of the window shades mentioned above (cellular shades & roman shades), it is best if they are mounted on the inside of the window frame (inside mount) as opposed to outside mount. You want the shade as close to the window surface as possible. Plantation shutters are always mounted this way and this, plus their mass, is why they provide great insulation.
